Trusted digital support – designed with care and delivered with integrity

We work with organisations across health, education, community services, charity, and industry to help them reach the people they want to support and ease the strain on their teams – with trusted mobile self-care apps.

Our core purpose is to:

  • increase health literacy across diverse populations
  • promote self-care before minor symptoms escalate
  • signpost local resources clearly and effectively

By putting verified health content directly into people's hands, we empower individuals to make better-informed decisions so your services can focus face-to-face care where it's needed most.

Who we are

Expert Self Care was founded in 2012 by Dr Knut Schroeder, a UK GP with over 30 years’ experience in the NHS and higher education.

What began as a single student health app has grown into a portfolio of award-winning mobile tools used nationally and internationally.

Fast forward to 2026, and Expert Self Care has become the UK's category-defining provider of specialist self-care apps – and the only provider with comprehensive PIF TICK accreditation. To date, our apps have safely supported over 250,000 people across the UK and Ireland.

Award-winning credibility

We build with clinical excellence, resulting in multiple industry awards for quality, safety, and real-world population impact:

How we work (and why we're different)

We are a small, specialist core team by design. We value relationships over volume, and our unique strength lies in our experience, expertise, and how we work:

  • Frontline clinical assurance: We're completely clinically led and grounded in public service values.
  • Uncompromising specialism: We specialise exclusively in creating highly developed self-care apps and focus on doing this exceptionally well.
  • Frictionless operational agility: Unlike larger software developers, we can make decisions today, test new clinical frameworks tomorrow, and adapt your app next week.
  • Carbon-neutral operations: We operate as a fully remote team by design. By eliminating a physical office footprint and unnecessary commuting, we keep our operational overheads low and directly support your organisation’s Net Zero and sustainability targets.
  • Collaboration and partnership: Behind every app is a wider ecosystem of clinicians, Impact Partners, lived-experience contributors, and academic reviewers, frequently involving over 10 partner organisations and dozens of contributer on a single project.

We focus on relevance, expertise, and speed – while aiming to deliver the best possible experience for our clients and users. We want every interaction with us to be positive.

For us, the personal touch still matters – now more than ever.

How our apps support your organisation.

Think of our apps as a trusted digital front door, a secure pocket guide, and a calm, reliable place people can return to whenever they need support.

We help you manage rising demand with limited capacity by allowing you to:

  • Reach people earlier – deliver clear, practical guidance they can trust, exactly when they first worry about a symptom.
  • Reduce avoidable demand – support safer self-care decisions to stop minor worries from flooding triage systems.
  • Ease pressure on teams – equip your staff with consistent, easily shareable digital resources.
  • Strengthen institutional trust – provide calm, evidence-informed digital support branded to your high standards.
  • Advance sustainability metrics – eliminate physical printing waste, lower logistical carbon footprints, and reduce unnecessary patient travel.

Our apps are designed to complement your existing services – they reinforce and extend care, and they never replace your teams.

Who we support

We partner with NHS trusts, universities, charities, local authorities, national bodies, and enterprise employers to support underserved or high-priority demographics, such as:

  • Students and young people navigating mental health challenges alongside study and life pressures.
  • Individuals who self-harm or feel suicidal, who require calm, non-judgemental guidance and clear safety steps.
  • People living with eating disorders who are managing long-term, complex support needs.
  • Struggling young carers balancing home responsibilities far beyond their years, education, and outside relationships.
  • Challenged farming communities facing deep isolation, financial pressure, and demanding work lives.
  • Offshore helicopter maintenance teams working in high-pressure, safety-critical environments globally.

How we're funded

We’re a completely independent, privately owned company – founded and grown with integrity. Our work is supported sustainably through:

  • Subscriptions for localised branded editions of our existing apps
  • Fully commissioned bespoke apps built for national organisations
  • Grants from trusted public bodies and not-for-profit foundations.
  • Ethical corporate sponsorships from organisations that share our public-service values.

Our ethical commitment is simple: All our apps remain entirely free for the public to download and use – with no ads, no paywalls, and no personal data collection.

Our decisions are guided by community impact, never by advertising revenue or shareholder pressure.
